Constant chest and upper back pain

Post a new topicby angelainpain on Fri Nov 14, 2008 7:07 pm

I am a 29 year old female with a family history of heart disease and cancer. It started 2 nights ago, I got a sharp pain in my heart that jetted off to the left side of my body, then my left arm went numb and I got shortness of breath. I got up to "wake it up" and got chills and started to twitch all over my body. After about 15 minutes I fell asleep. I woke the next morning and my arm was still numb and I had a dull ache in my chest. I went to work and it got worse. My chest pain got more noticeable but not severe and i got weak and lightheaded. I tried to go to the student health center and they told me to go straight to the ER. So I went there and my BP, Heart rate and ox level were normal. I waited for my EKG x ray and blood sugar test. All were normal. The doctor told me I have costochondritis and gave me anti-inflammatory meds and sent me home. I took them and went to bed. I woke up this morning and my arm felt normal and my lightheadedness had gone away. But the shortness of breath and chest pain are still there and has gotten worse throughout the day. I also developed a pain in my upper back that is directly across from my chest pain ( it is in the very center of my chest) The back pain is just as bad or worse than the chest pain and I have started to feel pressure there when I swallow. I called the doctor back because the pain medicine isn't helping at all. He just told me to come back to the ER, for more money I am sure. Should I believe the diagnosis he gave me and wait 2-4 weeks for the pain to go away? Or, is the back pain a sign of misdiagnosis?
