Heel pain

Post a new topicby frog on Thu Mar 27, 2008 11:41 am

Hi. Hope someone can help. I am a 39 year old. In past few months have suffered pain in right heel (inner going up ankle). Started as a dull ache but now a stabbing persisent pain. Also the heel hurts to touch on bad days! No real pattern except particularly bad when I walk long distances. Many thanks for reading. BW Frog

Heel pain as a result of plantarfascitis or spur formation will generally produce symptoms that are most pronounced with the first steps in the morning and/or after sitting for a period of 30 minutes to an hour and becoming active. It is usually found on the arch side and bottom of the foot. Heel pain/ rearfoot and-or ankle pain on the inside parallel with the arch and below the ankle bone may be tarsal tunnel syndrome. Pain is generally local to the side of the foot and heel and may radiate up the ankle. The symptoms of TT are usually more significant as the day progresses and fatigue increases. Thumping over the area of tenderness will produce a shooting discomfort. An X-ray will identify the spur. A clinical exam should easily differentiate TT from spur/fascitis. If TT is suspected it can be confirmed with a nerve conduction velocity/ electromyographic test(NCV/EMG).
My usual progressive heel spur/fascitis treatments are as follows:
oral nsaids, steroid injection, physical therapy, orthotics, and surgery.
The alternatives for TT are essentially the same although surgery may be most likely depending on the stage of nerve involvement determined by the NCV.
i hope this helps.
