Severe Hematoma on top of foot

Post a new topicby hematoma on Tue Apr 01, 2008 1:30 pm

52 days ago I dropped a 10lb picture on the top of my foot. Immediately it swelled to double the size. I elevated it right away and iced it and was taken to emerg by ambulance. I had 6 x-rays which showed no break. I was diagnosed with a severe hematoma sent home with a tension bandage, crutches and pain killers and was told to stay off it for 2 weeks and keep it elevated above my heart as much as possible. 4 days after I noticed a significant reduction in swelling but extensive bruising all over my entire foot. I went back to emerge and asked them if they would drain the lump on the top of my foot they said no they don't do that because the injury isn't affecting my circulation and there was no break in the skin to cause a possible infection. So then I went to my family doctor 2 weeks later and was sent for more x-rays to make sure a fracture wasn't missed. Still not broken. 52 days and 12 x-rays later and I'm still dependant on my crutches. All the bruising is gone but the lump remains I can barely wiggle or curl my toes and I cannot flex my foot. The lump on the top of my foot is spongy and soft like its filled with fluid or something. Also anytime I have my foot down for a short period my toes swell like sausages. I don't really get any pain anymore. The only explanation I keep getting is that it takes time to heal but I get no definate answers. My questions are?
1. How long do broken blood vessels take to heal?
2. Typically how long does this type of injury take to heal?
3. Should I pressure my G.P. to send me to a specialist.
4. Could I have a muscle tear or tendon damage even though I'm not in pain?
5. Will my foot be permanently wrecked?

Ok, went to doctor and she's very concerned at how swollen my foot still is. She says it could be that physio will help with circulation to reduce the lump of blood pooling at the top of my foot. Also there is a wait of 6 months to see an Ortho surgeon so she's sending me to a fracture clinic in hopes that I can get a quicker refferal to an Orthopedic surgeon for assessment. Her fear is that I may have torn the muscle and it has healed improperly. Has anyone out there experienced a similar incident and what was the recovery time?
