Severe pain, 1st 3 toes

Post a new topicby naninillinois on Sat Aug 16, 2008 6:15 pm

Could anyone enlighten me as to why I'm having such excruciating pain at the base of my 1st 3 toes? (Big toe and next 2). My Podiatrist blames it on the fact that I need a partial knee replacement, and sent me for new orthotics They help on certain days. On other days, my toes are tingling or feeling like knives are being plunged into the area, and I have to walk on my heel. Needless to say, this is interfering with everyday living, and I am at my wit's end! The Podiatrist said to just take Vicodin, but that does not always help. Even if I have the knee surgery, I will be required to get up and walk soon after surgery, and I will be screaming all the way down the corridor because of my toes! I am very brave when it comes to pain, so when I say this toe pain makes me cry, you know it's BAD. Any advice will be most welcome!

Have you asked you doctor if it could be a Mortons neuroma? Your symptoms sound similar to that. Check out the information on this site and see if it is the same as the problems you're having. I hope you find answers soon. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your reply. My podiatrist said he has no clue, but my primary care doctor put me on a medication for "frayed" nerves. It takes at least 2 weeks to work, but it's worth a try. Also, the orthotics people readjusted my inserts so that I'm walking on the outside of my foot (but now I'm afraid I'm going to break my ankle!) I will read more about Morton's neuroma, and will keep in touch.

Hi I hope the medicine your dr. prescribed will help. What did he give you? I know all about foot pain....that is how terrible it can be.

I think it is called "Teva," and is actually a med for seizures. So far it is not working, but the orthotics people had my shoe man make a "rocker" sole, which helps to prevent me from putting any pressure on the big toe, which is the worst. I'll report back in another week or so. Thanks for your concern!
